Blowsoc presents the world famous (well, nearly) pub quiz!

Forget essays and exams and come for some good old mental stimulation of the public house variety - prizes for winners and losers (how diplomatic).

We'll be opening doors at 8 but will wait for Uni Choir to finish before we begin the quiz (for the benefit of all our singing members), probably about 8:45

The bar will be open all night (wicked).

£2 per person

ALL WELCOME (Whether you're Blowsoc or not!)

See you all there

2010 review.

BlowSoc has had an extraordinary start to this year with a sell out wind orchestra concert and Moonlighters playing for the switching on of the Beeston Christmas Lights in front of upto 2,000 people. The defence of the MusSoc/ BlowSoc football cup started with a tense 2-2 draw and any and all who want to get involved in the football team should get in touch with Joe Matthews our team captain! The small ensembles were performing overtime this term, being involved in the lunchtime concert series and then the Christmas Extravaganza, brass ensemble even played in lenton for some community events aswell as spreading Christmas cheer throughout Beeston. To cap it all, BlowSoc united to form the annual monster windband and played festive music to the audience at St. Barnabas Cathedral. Freshers Bar crawl and our joint Christmas meal are just the beginning of some epic socials planned for this academic year... and the work starts now for 2011!

Hey tourers!!
Hope you are all well and somehow managing to contain your excitement for the epic event that will be TOUR 2011!
A few things to update you on/ask you to check...
1.       Payments
2.       Passports
3.       EHIC cards
4.       Visas
5.       Concerts

1.       Many thanks to everyone for cooperating with getting your deposits to me so quickly – we managed to get our payment to the tour company on time which means that a) they love us and b) more importantly, we’ve now secured our booking with the hostel in Strasbourg (www.ciarus.com).
Just to reiterate the final £200 payment is due by FRIDAY 28TH JANUARY, but if you would like to make a contribution towards this before the end of term then you are more than welcome. The Spring semester is very long so please be sensible with your money – personally I will be paying £100 before the end of this term and £100 in January and for anyone else who knows their money situation is tight I would recommend doing a similar thing.
If this would suit you better just put a cheque for the amount you want to contribute into the envelope on the noticeboard and I will keep note of how much you have paid! (Cheques to ‘U of NSU Blowsoc’ please)

2.       PLEASE FIND YOUR PASSPORTS AND CHECK THAT THEY HAVE NOT EXPIRED!!! If you need to apply for a new one the application procedure is not exactly the fastest thing in the world so do start thinking about it now!

3.       You will all need to take an EHIC card with you on tour. These are available for free to all UK residents and make you entitled to free or reduced cost medical treatment in any EU country so it is absolutely essential that you make sure you have one.   For more information or to apply just visit this website https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/home.do OR pick up a form from any post office.
THE CARDS DO EXPIRE - PLEASE CHECK THE DATE ON YOURS IF YOU ALREADY HAVE ONE!!!

If you’re not a UK resident
you won’t be able to get an EHIC so you must make sure you have health insurance that covers you in the EU not just the UK – contact me if you are unsure about this.

4.       If you are not an EU resident you’ll need to sort your Visa to be able to travel with us if yours only covers the UK. Please contact me if this is the case and I haven’t already spoken to you about it...

5.       On a lighter note...(!) we are now starting to get a couple of our concerts confirmed – one for the Wind Orchestra at Temple St Etienne in Mulhouse (search it on google images – there are some lovely photos...!), and a very exciting venture for Moonlighters in the form of a joint concert with a local big band which is being organised as a charity gig by the local council, so this promises a great evening with a very appreciative audience!
I’ve also got a very exciting list of potential excursions for us which range from the enjoyable to the....well, pretty bizarre I guess – I’ll keep you updated with this as soon as I have more confirmed!

Blowsoc in concert

Sunday 14th November
Great Hall
7.30

£8 (£5 CONCESSION) £4 UoN STUDENT - Tickets available from Lakeside Arts centre

University Wind Orchestra
University Brass Ensemble

Kieran O’Riordan, Jamie Njoku-Goodwin

Epic Melodies and Looney Tunes

Danny Elfman           Theme from “The Simpsons”
Raymond Scott         Powerhouse
John Williams           Hymn to the Fallen
Hans Zimmer            Music from “Gladiator”
Paul Hart                  Cartoon

Join the University Wind Orchestra and Brass Ensemble in an evening celebrating all aspects of the silver screen.  The epic melodies of John Williams’ moving Hymn to the Fallen (from Saving Private Ryan) and Hans Zimmer’s stirring portrait of noble sacrifice in Gladiator are counterbalanced by the sublime lunacy of Raymond Scott’s Powerhouse (the music which launched a thousand cartoons) and Paul Hart’s blistering soundtrack to an imaginary cartoon, dished up with enormous wit and panache.

Tour 2011

Tour Sign up has begun for members of our Wind Orchestra and Moonlighters Big Band and places are filling quickly. Places will be open to all our members soon!

Wind Orchestra Auditions

Wind Orchestra auditions are now over! After hours of our stalwart judges sitting through musician’s after musician’s attempts to join the orchestra, its decision time! Decisions are still being made so expect results by tomorrow evening (27th)! Good luck to all involved!

Finally, a huge thankyou to Laura for organising such a successful event!

10/05/10, Blowsoc AGM

We say goodbye to many Blowsocers this year, and we wish them good luck in the future! Stay in touch via our Alumni site currently under construction!

08/05/10, Brass Ensemble wins award!

Congratulations to Brass Ensemble who travelled to the Nuneaton Festival of Arts and won the open band competition! This is the first competition that Brass have entered, so it's a great achievment! Special mention to Brass manager Gibbins for making it all happen. See below for the cirtificate and adjudication comments:

07/05/10, Societies Awards

Blowsoc was awarded a GOLD AWARD at the societies awards to recognise the amazing work everyone's put in this year! Special congratulations go to Mim, Laura Simpson, Hugo and J-Pick for recieving individual achievment awards!

02/05/10, Tour Returns

After a fantastic week in Vienna, tour has come to a reluctant end. Under the guidance of tour manager Adam and conductors Paddy and Charlotte, we performed three brilliant concerts, went wine-tasting, swimming, sightseeing and a load of other '-ings'. Congratulations to Adam, and a big thanks to everyone who made it such a memorable week.

11/04/10, National Concert Band Festival

Wind Orchestra travelled down to sunny Birmingham yesterday to play in the finals of the National Concert Band Festival. The adjudicators liked our rendition of Martin Ellerby's Paris Sketches so much that we won a gold award. This is a great achievement and demonstrates that Blowsoc really can compete on a national level! A huge well done to everyone involved! See below for a recording of our performance with the adjudicator's commentary and below that for the written comments.

31/03/10, Blowosc-Mussoc Football

Despite goals from Joe Matthews and Tom Breeson, and a good effort from the whole team, Mussoc proved too much for the Blowsoc squad, with Rene Bloice-Sanders scoring a hatrick to leave the final score at 2-3. This leaves the series standing at 1-1 and all to play for in the final game next term! If you would like to help us reclaim the famous trophy, please get in touch. Check out the facebook group for more.

20/02/10, Tour Concerts Confirmed

Tour manager Adam Law has confirmed the times and places of three concerts we will perform on tour (and two of them are at spas!) Visit the tour mini-site for full details.
